Artificial intelligence has already changed the information environment: texts, images, video and audio are becoming increasingly easy to create, falsify and distribute on a large scale. In this situation, fact-checking is becoming no less important than before — and perhaps even more so. In the lecture, Ilya Ber will talk about how the work of journalists and fact-checkers is changing in the age of generative AI, what new risks are emerging for audiences, why AI cannot simply “replace” human fact-checking, and in which cases it can, on the contrary, be a useful tool.
The lecture will examine real-life examples of disinformation, manipulation and AI-related errors, as well as practical approaches to verifying information: how to assess a source, how to distinguish fact from interpretation, how to avoid falling for emotional manipulation, which warning signs should make a reader cautious, and which basic tools can be used for independent verification. Ilya will also explain how professional fact-checking works, using Provereno Media and international practice as examples.
Ilya Ber is a journalist, fact-checker and media literacy expert. He has worked in journalism for more than 20 years, including as an editor on television projects and for the BBC Russian Service. He currently works at Delfi. Ilya is the founder of „Проверено.Медиа“, one of the better-known Russian-language fact-checking projects.
