How does music influence our thinking and our cultural code? Why have certain musical phenomena been regarded as acceptable in some historical periods, while others were seen as dangerous or ideologically alien?
In the Middle Ages, certain intervals were considered unacceptable from the perspective of harmony and were associated with the devil. In the Soviet Union, avant-garde music was criticized as formalist, anti-people, and ideologically alien.
At this event, we will discuss how powerful a tool of propaganda music can be, how it has shaped worldviews across centuries, and why propaganda is especially effective where there is a lack of knowledge.
The lecture will be given by Pyotr Sushkov, a graduate of the music department of Viljandi Culture Academy and the Department of Jazz and Improvisational Music at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he earned a master’s degree. He is a journalist at Radio 4 and the author and host of programmes on culture.
We will meet on May 22 at 5:00 PM at Sillamäe Library (Viru 28, Sillamäe).
