TikTok stole science: Why is everyone talking about dopamine and cortisol?

Cortisol is the “bad” hormone we should get rid of at all costs. Dopamine makes us feel happy. Oxytocin is the “hug hormone”, while serotonin is known as the “happiness hormone”. Metabolism can supposedly be sped up or slowed down, and vitamin supplements can weaken or strengthen the immune system. Using real examples from TikTok and Instagram, we will look at how social media turns complex science into pop culture — and ask whether this kind of simplification is really as harmless, or as dangerous, as it may seem.
