Every year on 9 May, Europe Day is celebrated – a day of peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the Schuman Declaration. In a speech delivered in Paris in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a new vision for political cooperation in Europe. He proposed creating a European institution that would bring together coal and steel production. Less than a year later, a treaty establishing such an organization was signed. Schuman\u2019s proposal is considered the starting point of the present-day European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year, on 9 May from 12:00, the festival area \u201cOur Estonia, Our Europe\u201d will be open at Freedom Square. In addition to embassies and government institutions, the National Library of Estonia, which is running the Meediaradar project, will also take part. Library staff will invite visitors to join quizzes and crossword puzzles on media literacy. Those interested will also be able to choose books free of charge from the Hoiuraamatukogu collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Europe Day celebrations are organized by the European Commission Representation in Estonia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government Office, the State Shared Service Centre, the European Parliament Office in Estonia, the Ministry of Culture, the Integration Foundation, embassies of European countries, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
